Optim…giving back your life

When we look at the world around us, there is no doubt that our society is rapidly advancing. Our cell phones come equipped with high-definition cameras, and our tractors are rigged with state of the art GPS devices. We keep moving forward, seeking new and more efficient ways of doing things. Thanks to the Internet, we have become accustomed to instantaneous information. We want it now, whatever it is, and our advancements have shown us that this is possible. We want the best outcome in the shortest time; this remains true to many areas, but is extremely relevant in the medical field.

Hospitals across the nation are focusing on decreasing average lengths of stay while still maintaining quality of care and positive outcomes. Optim Medical Center- Tattnall, a physician-owned facility, strives to be at the forefront of this movement, bringing the most advanced techniques and cutting edge technology to patients right here in Reidsville, Ga. by getting them back to their daily lives sooner.

“With the help of technology, medicine, and new techniques, we can also expect shorter and shorter lengths of stay,” says John P. George M.D. at Optim Medical Center-Tattnall. “We get patients up and moving quicker, which in turn gets them home quicker,” said George. “Our innovative techniques have made patient’s length of stay at Optim Medical Center-Tattnall a day less than the national average.”

In addition to getting patients home quicker, Optim Medical Center-Tattnall’s complication rate for total knee replacements is 31 times lower than the national average predicted rate according to a Healthgrades 2015 analysis. While the national average can be as high as 7.22 percent, Optim Medical Center-Tattnall’s remains under one percent, at 0.23 percent to be exact.*

Optim’s success lies not only in technological and procedural advancements, but also in the individualized care each patient receives. Prior to surgery, each total joint replacement patient and their families have the opportunity to meet with Optim’s Total Joint Coordinator, Janet Fleming, a Registered Nurse of nearly 40 years. Janet discusses how to prepare for the surgery, what to expect during and after the procedure, and how to maximize recovery.

“What really sets us apart is the amount of teaching and family involvement that we do,” said Fleming. “We focus on educating the patient’s family as well as the patient, and let them know how important their role is.”

Hours after surgery is performed, patients will meet with members of Optim’s physical and occupational therapy teams to begin their journey to recovery. Caretakers are encouraged to attend therapy sessions alongside patients during their hospital stay so they can help them continue these exercises after they are discharged from the hospital.

Several days into recovery, after patients are settled in back at home, they can expect a call from Janet Fleming, a now familiar voice on the other end of the line, just to make sure all is well and answer any questions the patients or family members may have.

“It’s amazing to hear the positive feedback from patients when I meet them,” said Mike Hester, Chief Executive Officer for Optim Medical Center-Tattnall. “The care and compassion shown by our staff is truly remarkable.”

According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the first knee replacement was performed in 1968; now more than 600,000 are performed each year in the United States. Because of surgical and technological advances, total knee replacements are one of the most successful procedures in all of medicine, with more than 90 percent of patients experiencing a dramatic reduction in knee pain and a significant improvement in the ability to perform common activities.
